Eva Martin, aged 28, from Lisbellaw, County Fermanagh, served with the Ulster Defence Regiment. Eva was killed during a terrorist attack on the Deanery base of C Company, 6th Battalion, Ulster Defence Regiment, in Clogher, County Tyrone, on the 2nd May 1974.
During the service ASA Patron, Lt Col Ant Maher spoke about Eva Martin as well as the other brave men and women who served in the Ulster Defence Regiment, some of whom were present at the memorial service.
During the service a tree was planted, and a plaque unveiled, in memory of Private Eva Martin, by the Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland, Emma Little-Pengelly. Ms Little-Pengelly also laid a wreath with her party leader Gavin Robinson.
Others to also lay wreaths included ASA UK Ambassador Carla Lockhart MP, UUP Party Leader Doug Beattie MC MLA, Deborah Erskine MLA and Lord Mayor Alderman Margaret Tinsley, who was accompanied by fellow Councillors Paul Greenfield and Keith Ratcliffe.
Before the service ended those in attendance were led in prayer by ASA Padre, the Reverend Derek Kerr. A pipers lament was also played by ASA Honorary Piper Mark Smyth.
The Ancre Somme Association would like to take this opportunity to thank those who attended the service. We would also like to thank the Regimental Association of the Ulster Defence Regiment CGC and the Veterans Commissioner, Danny Kinahan, for their continued support.
We hope you will agree that it was a fitting service in memory of a brave soldier, Private Eva Martin.
