The 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau Lantern Parade and Night of Reflection on the 27th January 2025, hosted by the Ancre Somme Association Charity, is a significant event that honours the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and reflects on the atrocities committed during World War II. The parade, which will leave Russell Drive at 18:30, and the Night of Reflection, set to commence at 19:30 in Brownlow House, provide an opportunity for communities to come together, remember the past, and strive for a more peaceful future.
The historical context of the event is paramount in understanding its importance. The liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau on the 27th January, 1945, marked the end of one of the most horrific chapters in human history. The Nazi regime's systematic genocide of six million Jews, along with millions of others, has left a lasting impact on the world. The Ancre Somme Association Charity's decision to commemorate this anniversary through a lantern parade and night of reflection demonstrates the continued relevance of remembering the Holocaust and its victims.
The impact of the 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau Lantern Parade and Night of Reflection extends beyond just commemorating the past. By bringing communities together to remember the victims of the Holocaust, the event fosters a sense of unity and solidarity. It serves as a reminder of the enduring importance of combating hate and discrimination in all its forms. Through education and remembrance, we can work towards building a more inclusive and compassionate society.
To mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau in 2025, communities and organisations from across the UK have been invited by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust to take part in a special nationwide arts and education project – 80 Candles for 80 Years.
The Ancre Somme Association Charity are planning a Lantern Parade on the evening of the 27th January 2025. The parade will leave Russell Drive, Lurgan at 18.30 and make its way to Brownlow House.
The 80 lanterns will be carried by young people, from across Northern Ireland. This act will symbolize light in the darkness, hope in the face of despair, and a commitment to never forget the atrocities that occurred at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
If you would like to nominate a young person to carry a lantern, please email
info@asauk.org
On arrival at Brownlow House the young people will be invited to take part in a memorial arts project while the adults will be invited to join us in our night of reflection.
There is no charge to attend this event, but if you would like to support the charity you can do so by purchasing our 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau Commemorative badge.
To secure your seat at the event in Brownlow House, it is recommended to register as soon as possible due to limited seating which will be given to registered attendees.
